Your Handy Guide To Deciphering NFL Executive Double-talk
NFL coaches and execs are saying plenty of things they might not really mean.
NFL executives and coaches have been saying a lot of things recently that they may not truly mean. But don’t worry, football fan – we’ve got you covered. Thanks to our B.S.-to-Reality Dictionary, we’ve been able to translate the true meaning of it all to you.
Broncos GM John Elway
What he said: “There’s no rush. I told Peyton after the year that when I thought about it, I took my time. When you think about what you want to do, take your time. He’s got all the time he wants.”
What he meant: “P-Dog, my man, you need to hurry the %*$# up. I need to know if you really expect me to ride-or-die with Brock Osweiler. But not really. We both know you’re coming back. Just try to let me know by March 9 so I can see if I can negotiate to give you less money.”
Rams coach Jeff Fisher
On reports that Sam Bradford has been given permission to seek a trade: “I was surprised to hear that. That’s inaccurate. We talked about what our plans are for him… When we’ve had him, he’s 5-2-1 in our division. And we weren’t very good when we got here, so we’re counting on him. I’m betting on him and if that doesn’t happen, then we’ll win games with somebody else.”
What he meant: “If this guy has any cartilage left in his knees, he’ll be better than a lot of quarterbacks in this league. Certainly good enough to play for several of you terrible teams out there. Call me, Cleveland.”
Vikings COO Kevin Warren
What he said: “I think our organization and individuals in our organization from Zygi Wilf to Mark Wilf to coach Mike Zimmer to G.M. Rick Spielman all have made it very clear that they all would welcome Adrian back once he gets all the open items resolved with the league, and I feel the exact same way. My feeling about Adrian is I have a great respect for him as a football player and as a person. He’s part of our Vikings family. I would welcome him back with open arms. I don’t think he left anywhere.”
What he meant: “League rules prohibit me from sending you flowers. Please come back, Adrian. And if I have no intention of bringing you back, at least I’ve just increased your trade value because it looks like I want you to be part of this team.”
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll
On Marshawn Lynch possibly retiring or leaving the Seahawks: “We’re always preparing for the future with him. We’ve never thought of the future without him.”
What He Meant: “I spend every waking moment thinking about life without Marshawn. Well, other than the waking moments I spend wondering why I didn’t give the ball to Marshawn to win the Super Bowl. Hope he’s cool enough with that call to want to play for me again.”
