WR Torrey Smith says goodbye to Baltimore

Published

Free agent Torrey Smith didn’t announce his future home Sunday, but he bid farewell to his old city and team.

In a blog posted headlined, “Dear Baltimore,” Smith acknowledged, “I will be playing for a different organization, but I will remain committed to the City of Baltimore.”

The San Francisco 49ers are the front-runners to land the former Baltimore Raven, according to the Baltimore Sun. The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans also reportedly are interested in Smith, who had 49 receptions for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2014.

Smith wrote, “To the fans, it is tough to leave a city that I now call home. Y’all have embraced my family and me, and we truly appreciate it. Your support has been unreal and I will miss being able to make y’all proud. Although I may no longer be a member of the Baltimore Ravens, at heart, I will always be a Raven. What we accomplished together is timeless.”

He went on to thanks the Ravens’ management, coaches, staff and players.

If the 49ers sign Smith, he would be reunited with a former Ravens teammate, wide receiver Anquan Boldin. It also might mean the 49ers expect to lose impending free agent wide receiver Michael Crabtree.

A Virginia native, Smith starred at the University of Maryland before the Ravens selected him in the second round of the 2011 draft.

In four seasons with Baltimore, Smith appeared in all 64 games, making 62 starts. He averaged 53 catches for 898 yards per season. Smith’s 30 touchdown receptions ranks second in franchise history.
