Winless Jaguars zero in on stopping skid

Published

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to an 0-6 start for the second year in a row. And if they lose the next two at home to Cleveland and Miami, they’ll be 0-8 for the second consecutive year.

They’ve lost nine in a row dating to last year.

They are 4-18 since general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley were hired to remake the franchise.

They are tied for 30th in the takeaway ratio at minus-eight.

They are ranked 32nd on offense and 30th on defense in the NFL.

Despite all that, the Jaguars are trying to remain upbeat as they prepare to face the Browns on Sunday in search of their first victory of the season.

One of their four wins last year was a 32-28 victory over Cleveland in the only game the Jaguars have scored more than 30 points under Bradley.

The theme this week is to finish games better.

“We talk about it every day and we’re talking about it more and more,” Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said. “We can’t be up 17-0 in Philly and have two more drives going down in the red zone, and on the third-and-5 not convert there. We had a chance to be up 23 or 27 to nothing.

“We can’t have a game against San Diego where we’re up 14-10, have the ball again and don’t finish a couple of drives there. We should have found a way to get a couple more scores against Pittsburgh. We had drives and we stalled.

“You can’t be 53 percent, 64 percent on third down, even 40 percent against a really good Indy team and not finish more drives.”
