Who Has the Best Depth at Offensive Line in the NFL?
Find out which teams have the best depth along the offensive line in the NFL.
Depth is a rare commodity to have at any position in the NFL. The luxury to have players that can step up in case of an injury or suspension is a huge advantage for the teams that are in that envious position. This is especially true in the NFL.
Most teams can’t field a competent starting five in the trenches, let alone have players on the bench who can step up when called to task. The NFL is suffering from a bad trend in depth on the offensive line. It appears as though most of the great technicians and athletes are moving to defensive line early on in their careers, which has hurt the offensive line depth as a whole.
Despite this trend, there are a couple of teams who were shrewd enough to draft well and develop those players into capable offensive linemen. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the teams that are in that desirous position.
Dallas Cowboys
When you think of the great offensive lines with great depth in the NFL, the first team that comes to mind is the Dallas Cowboys. They have spent a considerable amount of resources on the offensive line, three first-round picks in the last five years, and they have been able to develop each and every one.
The Cowboys’ starting five is probably the best in the NFL with Tyron Smith, Ronald Leary (for the time being), Travis Frederick, Zack Martin and Doug Free. Each of those players is at least above average for their position with Smith, Frederick and Martin among the top-five in their respective craft.
The fact that a player such as La’el Collins, considered a top-10 talent by some draft analysts, could be a reserve points to how much depth the Cowboys have on the offensive line. Furthermore, Mackenzy Bernadeau is a great reserve interior offensive lineman to play at both guard spots or at center. Bernadeau could likely start for more than a handful of teams in the NFL and he has played considerable time with the Cowboys, who weren’t worse for wear with him in the lineup. Darrion Weems is a young tackle with a ton of potential that needs to be harnessed by the Cowboys coaching staff.
All in all, the Cowboys’ offensive line might not only be the most talented offensive line in the NFL, but they might have the best depth regardless of position in the NFL.
Cleveland Browns
Not far behind the Dallas Cowboys from a depth and talent perspective is the Cleveland Browns. Everyone knows about Joe Thomas and how talented he is protecting the blindside for the Browns’ quarterbacks, but they have a ton of talent throughout the depth chart on the offensive line.
Joel Bitonio is right there with Zack Matin as the best young offensive linemen in the NFL today. Alex Mack may be the best center in the NFL. John Greco is a really good guard who has the flexibility to fill in at center if need be and Mitchell Schwartz is a solid and dependable right tackle.
Behind their dominant starting five, the Browns are blessed with some more talent on the bench. Cameron Erving was one of the best interior offensive line prospects in the last NFL draft and he should be able to develop in a starter down the road. Furthermore, he has the flexibility to play all five offensive line spots, which is invaluable to a team. Michael Bowie has been hampered with some injuries, but he has shown some flashes of a capable tackle in the time he has played.
Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens are fortunate enough to have the best interior offensive line in the NFL. Marshal Yanda is possibly the best offensive lineman in the entire NFL. Kelechi Osemele is among the best guards in the NFL and Jeremy Zuttah is an underrated center who gets the job done week in and week out.
Ricky Wagner is one of the better right tackles in the NFL and Eugene Monroe has the ability to be a very good left tackle, even though he tends to struggle more than he should because of poor hand placement and punch timing.
Behind the starting five, James Hurst is a young and aggressive offensive tackle who could be Monroe’s successor if Monroe continues to struggle for the coming years. He hasn’t seen any meaningful action yet, but the small sample size in the preseason should have the Ravens coaching staff intrigued. John Urschel was a mess in college, but he has improved a ton in the NFL, which is a testament to how the Ravens develop offensive linemen. He has become a solid guard who was able to fill in admirably last year when he was called upon.
The Ravens don’t quite have the proven players that the Browns or Ravens have, but their offensive line has the ability to play as good as anyone in the NFL.
