Week 4 preview: Jaguars at Colts
The Sports Xchange
Jacksonville Jaguars (1-2) at Indianapolis Colts (1-2)
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET, at Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis – TV: CBS
*TV announcers: Tom McCarthy, Adam Archuleta
*Keys to the game: The Colts resuscitated their season with an improbable rally in the fourth quarter at Tennessee last week but QB Andrew Luck (shoulder) hasn’t been himself. Until he’s healthy, the Colts won’t look anything like the Super Bowl contender that lost in the AFC Championship Game in 2014. Getting more from newcomers RB Frank Gore and WR Andre Johnson could make everyone feel a little better, all the way up to GM Ryan Grigson. Luck could be busy if history holds – he’s 5-1 against Jacksonville with 10 TDs, three INTs and a 98.6 passer rating – and the Colts studied Tom Brady’s outing against the Jaguars last week.
QB Blake Bortles’ incremental improvement is promising, but the Jaguars aren’t ready to match the Colts on the scoreboard. Rookie RB T.J. Yeldon has 154 rushing yards and Indianapolis has charted dozens of missed tackles through three games. Bortles has been sacked seven times, but Indianapolis continues to look for a consistent pass rush. The Colts have only recorded four sacks this season, although three came in last week’s AFC South win over Tennessee.
*Matchup to watch – Colts OLB Robert Mathis vs. Titans offensive line: The Jaguars are expecting their starting offensive line back together for the first time since the first quarter of the opener. Mathis has 112 career sacks in 165 games, with 14.5 in 21 career against Jacksonville.
*Player spotlight – Jaguars DT Sen’Derrick Marks: Marks (knee) has missed the first three games but coach Gus Bradley said he’s getting closer to returning and, given the chronic struggle of Indy’s offensive line, could get healthy in a hurry in this matchup.
*Fast facts: The Colts have won 14 straight AFC South games dating back to the 2012 season. … Jacksonville sent an extra pass rusher at Brady on just four of 48 pass plays last week.
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Healthy or not, the Colts own the Jaguars and the AFC South until a legitimate challenger emerges. QB Andrew Luck picks up where he left off in the fourth quarter at Tennessee.
*Our pick: Colts 33-18
