Week 3 Preview: Jaguars at Patriots
The Sports Xchange
Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) at New England Patriots (2-0)
Sunday, 1:00 p.m. ET, at Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Mass. – TV: CBS
*TV announcers: Kevin Harlan, Rich Gannon
*Keys to the game: Jaguars coach Gus Bradley gets the next crack at the Rubik’s Cube that is the Tom Brady-led Patriots offense. Pressure from the front four wasn’t enough for the Bills last week, and Bradley’s Jags subscribe to a similar base defense. Brady carved up the Bills and has a 7-0 TD-to-INT ratio in 2015. That’s no surprise, perhaps, but the play of RB Dion Lewis (258 yards from scrimmage) has been. The Patriots could knock the dust off power back LeGarrette Blount, sticking to the tried-and-true New England approach of taking a big swing at opponents’ major weaknesses.
*Matchup to watch – Patriots C David Andrews vs. Jaguars DTs Roy Miller and Tyson Alualu: The overload front from Jacksonville is a concern cited by Brady behind a young line with two rookie starters. The Patriots’ line passed stiffer tests against Buffalo’s all-star front four and easily handled the Steelers Week 1.
*Player spotlight – Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski: With four touchdowns and 207 receiving yards in two games, the Jaguars don’t need to steal play sheets to know No. 87 will have a huge role this week. Taking him away – another story entirely. Bradley said SS Johnathan Cyprien (calf) would be a key cog in defending Gronk if healthy.
*Fast facts: Lewis has set career highs in yards from scrimmage in each of his first two games with the Patriots. … Brady is 6-0 in his career vs. Jacksonville. … Gronkowski leads the NFL with 58 TDs since 2010.
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
There’s no stopping Tom Brady, who has gone 91 attempts without an interception. Brady and the Patriots slice through a less-talented version of the Seahawks’ defense he devoured nearly 10 months ago in the Super Bowl.
*Our pick: Patriots 34-16.
