Week 2 preview: Cowboys at Eagles
The Sports Xchange
Dallas Cowboys (1-0) at Philadelphia Eagles (0-1)
Sunday, 4:25 p.m. ET, at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia – TV: FOX
*TV announcers: Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Erin Andrews
*Keys to the game: DeMarco Murray had nine yards rushing in his Eagles debut. He ran for 100-plus yards in 12 of 16 games with the Cowboys last season, and Sunday his old mates will be riled up for their first run-in with the 2014 NFL Offensive Player of the Year. That doesn’t mean the Cowboys are equipped to stop Murray, part of a dynamic three-headed monster in the backfield with Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathews. The Eagles averaged 30 points against the Cowboys last season because coach Chip Kelly’s all-levels passing tree is kryptonite to the cover-2 scheme. Dallas is limited without rookie DE Randy Gregory (ankle), and resorting to more blitz packages could be inviting doom.
Eagles big-money CB Byron Maxwell was largely left on an island in Week 1 and often struggled to stick close enough to Falcons WRs Julio Jones and Roddy White. Philadelphia won’t have to fret the Maxwell-Dez Bryant (foot) matchup, but the Cowboys can freely challenge single coverage and hope to catch speedy, playmaking FS Malcolm Jenkins out of position. The Cowboys averaged 4.6 yards per carry last season but only 3.5 a pop in the opener. To spar with the Eagles for four quarters, Dallas needs a dominant effort from the offensive line.
*Matchup to watch – Eagles TE Zach Ertz vs. Cowboys SLB Kyle Wilber: Ertz has rounded into shape quickly, recovering from an abdominal strain to make multiple athletic plays at Atlanta in Week 1. He has edges in size, reach and speed over Wilber.
*Player spotlight – Cowboys WR Terrence Williams: He won’t fill Bryant’s shoes on his own, but Williams has the trust of QB Tony Romo to win in tight coverage and move the sticks on third down. This is his first shot to prove he can consistently win one-on-one against top cornerbacks.
*Fast facts: The Eagles rank first in the NFL with 12.77 yards per completion since the start of the 2013 season. … Romo leads the NFL with 28 game-winning drives since 2006.
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Eagles RB DeMarco Murray shows the Cowboys what they’re missing and grinds his axe for four quarters to pile up more than 200 yards and more than enough cushion for Philadelphia’s first win of the season.
*Our pick: Eagles 31-20.
