Vikings Cave Under Corporate Pressure, Suspend Peterson
The former MVP has been suspended indefinitely.
It took a little over 24 hours but the Minnesota Vikings changed course and placed All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson on the exempt/commissioner’s permission list, meaning that he’s suspended indefinitely from all team activities in light of his child abuse case.
After Peterson was deactivated from Sunday’s 31-7 loss to New England, Minnesota reinstated the former MVP on Monday.
“On Friday, there was a significant amount of uncertainty,” Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said. “We felt it best to step back, evaluate and make our decision based on all the information gathered.
“We are trying to do the right thing. This is a difficult path to navigate how a parent disciplines his child. Based on the extensive information that we have right now and what we know about Adrian, not only as a person but what he also has done for this community, we believe he deserves to play while the legal process plays out.”
Shortly after the press conference, Radisson suspended it’s sponsorship with the Vikings and the NFL’s official beer sponsor, Anheuser-Busch, voiced their concern with the league in a statement.
“We are disappointed and increasingly concerned by the recent incidents that have overshadowed this NFL season,” representatives from Anheuser-Busch wrote. “We are not yet satisfied with the league’s handling of behaviors that so clearly go against our own company culture and moral code. We have shared our concerns and expectations with the league.”
The Vikings responded by making a statement at roughly 2 a.m. Eastern Time.
“After giving the situation additional thought, we have decided this is the appropriate course of action for the organization and for Adrian,” the statement reads.
It’s clear that pressure from corporate sponsors led the NFL and the Vikings to this conclusion.
