Vick enjoying time with Jets; doesn’t know what’s next

FLORHAM PARK, N.J — Michael Vick is looking forward to playing the rest of the season for the New York Jets.

After that?

He has no idea.

Vick has brought stability to the quarterback position since taking over for Geno Smith in the first quarter of a 43-23 loss to the Bills on Oct. 26. But as a 34-year-old veteran on a one-year deal, he knows it’s impossible to project where he’ll be next season, especially given the likely tumult that awaits the Jets once this rebuilding season is complete.

“Whether I am in the plans or not, that is the future,” Vick said Tuesday. “I am not going to try to predict that. The only thing I can do is control what I can control and that’s the next game against Buffalo. I am happy with whatever the situation may be. I understand the type of business that we are in.”

The business side of things may positively impact Vick if his final six games are anything like the two-plus games he’s played since Smith imploded with three first-quarter interceptions against the Bills.

Vick won’t likely be anyone’s choice as a franchise quarterback, but given the dearth of competent signal-callers around the league, there will be a healthy market for his services if he can continue to play efficient football and exhibit his elite arm and mobility.

Since taking over for Smith, Vick is completing 59.8 percent of his passes (49-for-82) for 481 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. His career completion rate is 56.2 percent with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 1.52.

Vick has also rushed for 126 yards, the most among the Jets in the last three games.

“I just want to continue to keep playing at a high level,” Vick said. “Keep putting myself and the team in a position to be successful and keep continuing to sharpen up my craft and get better each and every day.”
