Underwear Olympics take front stage at NFL Combine

Published

on

INDIANAPOLIS — More than 300 pro football prospects begin the popular, but controversial underwear Olympics phase of the NFL Combine here Friday with more of it televised by NFL Network than ever before.

Particularly noteworthy is the plan to televise real-time results for the widely-followed, yet often criticized, 40-yard runs.

NFL Network coordinated technology with Zybek Sports to show the running clock and results of the electronic time, which is started manually by a scout seven yards away from the runner and ended when that runner crosses a beam that is 30 inches high at the finish line.

However, it seems unlikely somebody will beat the 4.24-second modern combine record — basically those run since 2000 and timed electronically. And it is even less likely anybody will approach the 4.21-second time by former Auburn superstar Bo Jackson in 1986 by a hand-held stop watch. Last year, Kent State wide receiver Dri Archer managed the fastest hand held time since Jackson with a 4.16 clocking, although in the last few years, combine officials and NFL Media only acknowledge electronic times.

But there are other events in which the best marks this century may be challenged, including. Based on research by NFLDrafScout.com, some of the best results since 2000 include:

— Bench press (repetitions with 225 pounds): 49 — Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State, 2011.

— Highest Vertical Jump: 46 inches – Gerald Sensabaugh, FS, North Carolina – 2005.

— 20-yard shuttle: 3.73 – Kevin Kasper, WR, Iowa – 2001.

— Quickest 3-Cone Drill Time: 6.34 – Sedrick Curry, CB, Texas A&M – 2000.

–Longest Broad Jump: 11’07” – Jamie Collins, OLB, Southern Miss – 2013.

Although the medical tests and interviews by coaches and scouts be the most valuable tools in evaluation a draft prospect, they obviously are not televised.

Meantime, NFL Network will broadcast live the running and jumping events that will be shown by position according to this schedule:

–Friday, February 20: 9:00 AM – Kickers, Offensive Linemen & Tight Ends.

–Saturday, February 21: 9:00 AM – Running Backs, Quarterbacks & Wide Receivers.

–Sunday, February 22: 9:00 AM – Defensive Linemen & Linebackers –

–Monday, February 23: 9:00 AM – Defensive Backs.

To help keep this year’s results in historic prospective, here are lists kept by NFLDraftscout.com of the best marks in each event since 2000:
