Tracking result of 49ers’ Smith-Kaepernick debate
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — When the Kansas City Chiefs visit the San Francisco 49ers Sunday they will be led by quarterback Alex Smith.
Smith, originally the 49ers’ No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL draft, was traded to the Chiefs on March 12, 2013 after being kept on the bench at the end of 2012 when he recovered from a concussion. Colin Kaepernick kept the starting job and went all the way to the Super Bowl that season.
So on March 12, 2013 the 49ers traded Smith to the Chiefs for two second-round picks.
Last year the Chiefs finished 11-5, second in the AFC West and were knocked out of the post season by the Indianapolis Colts in a Wild Card playoff. The 49ers finished 12-4, second in the NFC West to the Seattle Seahawks and ultimately lost to their divisional rival in the NFC title game.
Each team is 2-2 heading into Sunday’s matchup at Levi’s Stadium.
Here’s a look at how the rest of the deal has played out:
The 49ers currently have five players to show for the two picks, which were supposed to be No. 34 in 2013 and No. 56 in 2014:
–Defensive end Tank Carradine, the No. 40 pick in 2013 after the 49ers moved down from 34 in a trade with the Tennessee Titans.
–Inside linebacker Chris Borland, the No. 77 pick in 2014, which also was acquired in the 2013 trade with Tennessee.
–Outside linebacker Corey Lemonier, the No. 88 pick in 2013 after the 49ers used another pick acquired from Tennessee in the Carradine deal (a seventh-rounder) to move up five spots in a trade with the Green Bay Packers
–Running back Carlos Hyde, the No. 57 pick in 2014 after the 49ers moved down (from 56 to 63) and then back up (to 57) in deals with the Denver Broncos and then the Miami Dolphins.
–Wide receiver Stevie Johnson, acquired from the Buffalo Bills for a 2015 fourth-round pick the 49ers also picked up in the Denver trade.
