Titans president wants better results

Published

Tennessee Titans president and CEO Tommy Smith admits he is an impatient person as his team has started out 2-6 halfway through the season.

Despite his disappointment, Smith said Friday that he has no plans to make changes at the top with general manager Ruston Webster and head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

“I can’t see that at all, no,” Smith said on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, Tenn.

“I’m an impatient person. I want results now. But we have to be honest about where we are.”

Smith called the offensive line the most disappointing part of the team after spending high draft picks and free agency money to bring in players over the last two years.

The Titans have spent No. 1 picks on right guard Chance Warmack and left tackle Taylor Lewan and given free agent contracts to left guard Andy Levitre and right tackle Michael Oher. The Titans rank 24th in the league in passing with 219.9 yards per game and are 20th in rushing.

“We spent a fortune to build this line,” Smith said. “I am committed, I’ve told the coach, I don’t care when someone was drafted or what they’re paid, if they’re not getting the job done, to get somebody else.

“We have to get consistent performance out of the line. I know the coach is as upset about this as anyone. I know the players are professionals, they expect more of themselves. I’m hopeful and trustful that in the second half of the season we’re going to see better performance out of that group.”

Smith was named president and CEO of the Titans following the death of late owner Bud Adams on Oct. 21, 2013. Smith fired head coach Mike Munchak in January and then hired Whisenhunt. Webster is in his third season as general manager.
