Many have said that the definition of insanity is doing the same things, over and over, and expecting different results.

Numerous sources are reporting that the Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt, just seven games into his second season.

“After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties,” said Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk. “We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction. I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward.”

Whisenhunt won just three games out of the 23 games he coached in Tennessee, and it appears that he is being made a scapegoat while taking over arguably the least talented roster in the NFL and then starting a rookie quarterback.

Former Titans head coach Mike Munchak was shown the door after three seasons and a 22-26 record over that time.  He inherited a not-so-great roster with another rookie quarterback in Jake Locker.

There’s nothing that says that the Titans are being egregiously under coached.  All of the problems in Tennessee point to a a roster stricken of talent from years of mismanagement.

When Whisenhunt has had a quarterback, he has proven himself to be a more than capable coach.  He helped Pittsburgh win Super Bowl XL as the offensive coordinator and then resurrected a lifeless Arizona Cardinals franchise and brought them to the Super Bowl in just his second season as head coach.

General Manager Ruston Webster is in his fourth season and the roster is considerably worse than when he took over.  Firing his second head coach reeks of him pointing fingers elsewhere to avoid his own shortcomings.

Mike Mularkey takes over in the interim, and the last time he was a head coach was in 2012 when he navigated the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 2-14 record.

It doesn’t appear that the Titans have a real plan in place and they seem to be making changes for the sake of change and nothing more.
