The NFL’s Biggest Athletic Freaks
Click inside to see who the freakiest athletes in the NFL are.
The NFL is a collection of some of the best athletes in the world playing the game of football. Despite the fact that most of the NFL players are athletic freaks in comparison to a regular Joe, there are players who athletic freaks even when compared with the other NFL players.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at who these freakishly athletic players are.
Byron Jones, Dallas Cowboys
Byron Jones is a good football player, but he is in a rare air when it comes to athleticism. The number he put up at his pro day and the NFL combine are otherworldly. Not only did Jones break the world record in the broad jump (12.25 feet), but he also put up a 44.5-inch vertical jump, 4.4-second 40-yard dash, 3.94-second short shuttle and 6.78-second three-cone drill. Each one of those measurements and times are special by itself, but when you add them together you see a truly special athlete.
J.J. Watt, Houston Texans
J.J. Watt could be the best player in football. One of the reasons why he is so special is his insane athleticism and strength for his size. Watt measured in at 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds and put up ungodly numbers at the NFL combine. Despite his size, Watt ran a 4.81-second 40-yard dash, a 4.21-second short shuttle and an insane 6.88-second three-cone drill. This is the reason why Watt can be so successful on the edge despite being as big as a lot of defensive tackles.
Evan Mathis, Arizona Cardinals
The fact that Evan Mathis, an offensive guard, may be the best athlete in the NFL is truly remarkable. A problem that many have when they look at athletic testing is not adjusting for size. A 300-pound man who runs a 4.9-second 40-yard dash is much more impressive than an 180-pound athlete who runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash. Mathis put on a show at the NFL combine, which led him to have the best SPARQ score in relation to his position.
Terron Armstead, New Orleans Saints
Unlike the others on this list, Terron Armstead is apart of this group because of his functional athleticism shown on the football field. It’s not that he didn’t test well, he did run a 4.7-second 40-yard dash, but he does things that almost no other offensive tackle can do. Armstead is almost impossible to beat with speed and you regularly see him getting to the second level, changing directions and making blocks.
Von Miller, Denver Broncos
Like Armstead, Von Miller is on this list for the athleticism he shows on the field. There isn’t another player in the NFL who has the speed, quickness and size of Miller. His ability to bend around the corner is truly special. Furthermore, Miller upfield burst is like that of a wide receiver, which makes him nearly impossible to block for offensive linemen. Miller is a special athlete who utilizes it to his advantage every single week.
