Texans RB Foster undergoes groin surgery

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster underwent surgery Friday morning to repair a groin muscle that was torn off the bone, according to ESPN.com.

Foster went to Philadelphia for a second opinion with Dr. William Meyers, who is a sports hernia specialist.

A timetable for his return is unclear, but the Texans hope his recovery time will be shorter than three months, ESPN reported.

Foster likely will be placed on short-term injured reserve, which would allow the Texans to bring him back to practices after Week 6 and into a game after Week 8.

Foster suffered the injury when he pulled up with a limp during a pass play Monday night during the Texans’ first fully padded training camp practice.

Foster, 28, missed 11 games in the past two seasons due to injuries and played in 13 games last year. He finished with 1,246 rushing yards and 327 receiving yards for 13 total touchdowns Houston in 2014.

The Texans also have running backs Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, Chris Polk and rookie Kenny Hilliard on their roster. The team has not added another running back after working out several players this week.

“We didn’t make a move immediately because we felt like we were OK,” Texans general manager Rick Smith said. “Chris Polk is on the mend and so hopefully he’ll be back soon. We’ll just keep adjusting to whatever happens out here on the field.”
