Texans LB Clowney out again
Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney will not play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans due to ongoing complications with his surgically repaired knee.
“He’s still trying to work that knee out and get it right,” defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel said. “He won’t be with us on Sunday.”
Clowney, the No. 1 pick in the draft in May, suffered a torn meniscus in the season opener and had surgery immediately. He returned against Tennessee on Oct. 26 then missed the game vs. Philadelphia the next week before the Texans’ bye. He returned to play the past two games, but the knee is still a hindrance.
On Thursday, he said he likely would not play this week.
“My knee swelled up on me a little bit, and I’m trying to get it back to the way it was before,” Clowney told the Houston Chronicle. “It’s bothering me a lot right now. I’m in a lot of pain. It’s been bothering me off and on the whole season. It’s the kind of thing if I can go, I’ll go. If I can’t, I won’t.”
On Friday, coach Bill O’Brien said the team has not considered shutting down Clowney for the season.
“Like I said two weeks ago: Part of it is just being unlucky,” O’Brien said. “He’s had a year here that’s been tough for him as far as injuries go. He’s had the hernia at the beginning of the year, he had the concussion in the Denver game, he’s had the knee he’s dealing with for all of the year.
“He’s played some. Sometimes he hasn’t been able to play. So I think we’ve got to continue to manage it and communicate with him as to how he feels and just stay on that road right now.”
