Tebow won’t join Sam, other veterans at Combine

Published

on

Tim Tebow won’t be there, but former first-round draft picks Jamaal Anderson, Adam Carriker and Felix Jones will be among those joining Michael Sam at the first NFL Veteran Combine on March 22.

The list of 107 players released by the NFL on Wednesday also includes veteran street free agents such as Michael Bush, Mikel LeShoure and Darron Thomas.

During the Combine at the Arizona Cardinals Practice Facility in Tempe, Ariz., players will be tested and evaluated by NFL scouting personnel. Measurements, results and videos of the workouts will be shared with all 32 NFL teams.

“Combines have long provided draft-eligible players with the forum needed to showcase their skills to NFL teams,” said Matt Birk, the NFL’s director of football development. “The NFL Veteran Combine will give veteran free agents a similar opportunity to work out in front of club personnel in a streamlined process.”

Tebow had been considered a possible participant because he reportedly has been working with independent quarterbacks coach Tom House, who tutors New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, and had shown improved accuracy. But Tebow was not on the list of participants released by the league.

Tebow, a first-round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2010, hasn’t played in the NFL since 2012.

Sam, the first openly gay NFL prospect, was drafted in the seventh round last year by the St. Louis Rams but failed to make their roster. He spent seven weeks on the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad before being released in October.

Sam is on the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” and continues to train in Los Angeles at a gym co-owned by former NFL linebacker Brian Urlacher and FOX NFL insider Jay Glazer.

Anderson was the eighth overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2007 draft but has been out of the league since 2012. The defensive end had 7.5 sacks in 77 games for the Falcons, Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals.

Carriker, the 13th overall pick by the Rams in 2007, also has not played since 2012, due to injuries. The defensive end recorded nine sacks in 65 games for the Rams and Washington Redskins.

Jones, a first-round pick by the Cowboys in 2008, did not play last season. In 80 games with the Cowboys (2008-12) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2013), he rushed for 2,912 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging 4.7 yards per carry.

Bush is a seven-year veteran who has 3,250 rushing yards for the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears.

LeShoure was a 2011 second-round pick of the Detroit Lions who gained 1,012 scrimmage yards and scored nine touchdowns in 2012.

Thomas was the quarterback at Oregon before Marcus Mariota took over, won the Heisman Trophy and became a top-five prospect in this year’s draft. Thomas left a year early and has not found a place in the NFL, with stints in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League.
