TE Cameron says Tannehill big part of Dolphins decision

Published

on

Newly signed free agent tight end Jordan Cameron said Friday he chose the Miami Dolphins based in “big part” on the opportunity to play with quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Cameron, initially reported to have agreed to re-sign with the Cleveland Browns, signed with the Dolphins on Thursday night.

Earlier Thursday, it was reported Cameron had a deal in place with the Browns worth $15 million over two years. But by the evening, the Dolphins announced that they had lured Cameron away from Cleveland with the same offer.

“The quarterback situation, he’s (Ryan Tannehill) an up and coming guy, very young and he’s working hard,” Cameron said Friday at his introductory press conference. “They were saying a lot of good things about him yesterday in this building and that’s a big part of my decision. The people around the building were awesome. I’m very excited to be here, it’s going to be a good fit.”

Cameron, 26, has spent all four of his years in the NFL with the Browns, but has had injury issues, suffering three concussion in as many seasons.

Cameron dismissed concerns regarding his concussion history.

“If it was a concern for me, I wouldn’t be here right now,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of specialists and talked to a lot of people and it’s cleared. My baseline is the same as it was six years ago. There is no cause for concern on my end for this and the Dolphins felt the same.

“I mean, I think it might have,” he said when asked whether the concussions hurt his market in free agency. “In this day and age, it’s kind of a sensitive topic in the NFL and, for the right reasons, they’re looking out for the players and I think it might have hurt, but at the end of the day, I wanted to be here and it’s a good deal.”

Regarding whether he made a verbal agreement to the Browns at any point Thursday, Cameron had the shortest answer:

“No, sir.”

The Dolphins officially made defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh the highest-paid defender in NFL history on Wednesday. The sides came to agreement Sunday on a six-year deal that reportedly is worth $114 million and includes $60 million in guaranteed money.

Cameron said Suh can be a recruiting tool to bring other players in.

“That obviously helps. I’m glad I don’t have to play against him,” Cameron said. “It’s just the fact that they are getting guys here and they are pushing for young talent and building. He’s a building block. You need guys like that to win ball games. Obviously, you can see this organization is doing a great job of bringing guys in to make that happen.”

A fourth-round pick in 2011, Cameron has caught 130 passes for 1,600 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Browns. In 2013, he caught 80 passes for 917 yards and seven scores. Last season, he played in just 10 games, with 24 receptions for 424 yards and two touchdowns.
