Suh’s contract voids, talks up to Lions
Ndamukong Suh’s rookie contract officially voided Friday and the Detroit Lions want to re-sign their all-pro defensive tackle.
That much we know.
But absent of a new deal or application of the franchise tag, the second overall pick in the 2010 draft will become an unrestricted free agent on March 10. The Lions are the only team that can officially talk contract details with Suh until the three-day free agent negotiating period opens March 7. Suh can’t sign with another team until 4 p.m. on March 10.
The Detroit Free Press reported Friday that the Lions and Suh have yet to commence talks aimed at extending his stay, despite team president Tom Lewand stating last week that the team has a “very, very good chance” of striking a deal with him within the next few weeks.
“I really do believe he’s got a lot invested in here, in himself and the community and the football team,” Lewand said during an interview on WDIV-TV in Detroit last week. “He wants to have success in the NFL, obviously, but he wants to do that with us.
“We’ve had a good chunk of our salary cap tied up in three players over the last few years. Matthew (Stafford), Calvin (Johnson) and Ndamukong have all had very lucrative contracts under the old rookie system, and even as Matthew and Calvin have done their extensions. So we’ve done that, we’ve lived in that environment. There’s no reason we can’t continue to live in that environment.”
Suh’s price tag for a new deal would be steep, given the Houston Texans gave defensive end J.J. Watt a $100 million deal last year without the leverage of free agency.
The franchise tag reportedly would be $26.9 million for 2015.
Suh, 28, has said that he will allow agent Jimmy Sexton to pick his next destination.
According to Bleacher Report, Suh wants to sign with the Seattle Seahawks. However, it may be difficult for the Seahawks to fit Suh in the budget, considering that quarterback Russell Wilson will soon be offered a huge contract extension.
Suh helped Detroit lead the league in rushing defense, and he finished with a team-high 8.5 sacks, then added two in the wild-card loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
