Steelers Use Top Two Picks in NFL Draft To Address Aging Defense
Pittsburgh using early rounds in 2015 NFL Draft to build up their defense.
The first step to help the Steelers’ secondary was taken with the 56th pick overall as they drafted Mississippi cornerback Senquez Golson. A first-team All-American during his final season, Golson (5-foot-9, 184 pounds) is a gambler in the secondary. He is not afraid to play cat-and-mouse with the quarterback in order to bait him into throwing his way.
Addressing the cornerback position a dire need for Pittsburgh in the early rounds of the NFL Draft. Ike Taylor retired after 12 seasons with the Steelers and Cortez Allen, once viewed the heir apparent to Taylor, regressed mightily last year. Pittsburgh has used its top two selections in both 2014-15 to draft defensive players in the draft.
Many thought the team would use the 22nd overall selection on either a cornerback or safety, but the Steelers elected to draft linebacker Alvin “Bud” Dupree. In fact, Pittsburgh has addressed the position three times in the first round over the last three years drafting Jarvis Jones (2013) and Ryan Shazier (2014), showing the glaring need to replenish the position that makes their defense special.
Pittsburgh has an incredible knack for finding late round talent. Extra bodies in the secondary and should likely continue on day three of the NFL Draft as their scouting department unearths another contributor to help bolster the secondary.
