Steelers RB Bell taking it day by day
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell, who hasn’t been ruled out of Saturday night’s wild-card game despite a knee injury, told NFL Network, “I feel great” and “I’m just going to take it day by day.”
The Steelers are preparing for a home playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens and operating under the assumption Bell won’t be available due to his hyperextended knee.
Bell was hurt by Cincinnati Bengals safety Reggie Nelson’s low open-field tackle in the third quarter last Sunday.
Coach Mike Tomlin said the team will “leave the light on” for Bell, who reportedly could barely walk Monday but is working out and receiving treatment at the Steelers’ practice facility.
Tomlin said he was encouraged by what he saw as he talked to Bell, who was riding a stationary bike, on Tuesday.
Bell has rushed for 1,361 yards and eight touchdowns this season. He also has caught 83 passes for 854 yards and three touchdowns.
The Steelers signed free agent running back Ben Tate on Tuesday, adding him to the backfield mix with Josh Harris and rookie Dri Archer.
Tate, who was released by the Vikings last week, formerly played for the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans. He played in just three games for Minnesota, totaling 13 carries for 38 yards. Before that, he rushed for 333 yards — averaging 3.1 yards per carry — and four touchdowns before he was waived by Cleveland this season.
