Steelers: No update on Polamalu’s status
With the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly hoping Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu would retire so they didn’t have to cut him, the team addressed the matter with a non-committal statement Monday.
“At this time, we do not have an update on Troy Polamalu or his contract status,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said on team’s official website. “We will continue to communicate with Troy and his representatives regarding his future.”
The statement does not indicate whether Polamalu will return for the 2015 season, be released or even retire, with one day remaining before the official start of NFL free agency.
Polamalu, one of the greatest players in team history, has two years left on his contract with a $6 million salary scheduled for 2015. If the Steelers release Polamalu, they will create $3.75 million in salary-cap room for 2015. If they designate him as a June cut, they would create $6 million in room — but not until June — this year and he would count $2.25 million on their cap in 2016.
Polamalu’s agent, Marvin Demoff, told the Chicago Tribune last week that Polamalu is still determining whether he wants to retire or play this year and that the decision is not “imminent.”
Polamalu, who turns 34 in April, recorded a team-high eight tackles the Steelers’ playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC wild-card round after missing the final two regular-season games because of a knee injury.
The eight-time Pro Bowler had 61 tackles in 12 regular-season games but he did not intercept a pass and only forced one fumble.
