PITTSBURGH — On a day when style points didn’t come from the Pittsburgh Steelers’ throwback bumble-bee stripe uniforms, Ben Roethlisberger racked them up in multiples of 100.

Roethlisberger won his 100th career game in grand fashion, setting team records with 522 passing yards and six touchdown tosses to guide the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 51-34 win over the Indianapolis Colts at Heinz Field on Sunday.

“There are a lot of great quarterbacks who have played this game,” said Roethlisberger, the first player in NFL history with multiple 500-yard passing game. “I’m honored to be mentioned in the same breath as some of those guys.

“The guys up front gave me all kinds of time and some other guys caught balls downfield and made some plays. But we still left some plays out there. I missed some passes. … There’s still a lot we can improve on.”

Roethlisberger completed a career-best 40 of 49 passes and his 522 passing yards tied for the fourth-highest total in NFL history. Andrew Luck of the Colts had 400 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Indianapolis, coming off of a shutout of the Cincinnati Bengals last week, made it a one-possession game, 42-34, with a pair of touchdowns 57 seconds apart to end the third quarter but the Steelers kept the accelerator to the floor.

The 51 points were the most scored by the Steelers (5-3) during coach Mike Tomlin’s eight seasons as coach. The AFC South-leading Colts (5-3) had their five-game winning streak snapped. The teams combined for 85 points, most in the NFL this season.

Roethlisberger had a 150.6 passer rating and tossed a pair of touchdown passes to rookie Martavis Bryant, covering 2 and 5 yards, and another pair of 47 and 8 yards to Antonio Brown, who led the team with 10 receptions for 133 yards.

Roethlisberger’s other TD passes were an 18-yarder to Markus Wheaton and an 11-yarder to tight end Heath Miller, who had more than 100 yards receiving Sunday and also in Roethlisberger’s 503-yard passing effort at Green Bay on Dec. 20, 2009.

“Ben is a great quarterback,” Bryant said. “He’s an awesome leader. I’m very happy for him, very proud of him and the way he played.”

Roethlisberger completed 23 of 27 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns before halftime as the Steelers rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 35-20 halftime lead.

Wheaton’s touchdown catch was the first of his career. Bryant, a rookie, has three touchdown catches in the past two games after being inactive the first six. Brown pushed his total to a team-leading seven touchdowns with another 100-yard receiving game.

“We realize that in football, you have to prove yourself every week and there’s no resting on laurels. Once this is done, who you are is your last game and this is our last game, so we realize we’re going to have to get back on the practice field. I think we have an extra day this week for a Monday night game, so we’ll get it going again.” — Quarterback Andrew Luck

What we learned about the Steelers:

1. The Steelers won back-to-back games for the first time season. They won back-to-back games three times last year, including a pair three-game winning streaks in the final eight games en route to an 8-8 finish.

2. The Steelers continue to struggle when it comes to pressuring opposing quarterbacks, although they harassed Colts quarterback Andrew Luck all day. They had only two sacks Sunday, but pick off two passes and forced a safety. Pittsburgh has just 12 at the midway point of the season and is on pace for its worst output ever. Pittsburgh has never had fewer than 31 sacks in a 16-game season.

–WR Markus Wheaton, who started the season with six receptions for 97 yards in the opener and has remained the starter with Antonio Brown, had only three receptions in the past three games. But Wheaton bounced back Sunday with five catches for 56 yards and he scored his first NFL touchdown on an 18-yard catch in the first quarter. “Felt great to finally get a touchdown,” said Wheaton, a second-year player who was targeted just five times. “I feel like I am making progress each week.”

–WR Martavis Bryant had become a much bigger factor in the Steelers’ offense the past two games after being inactive the first six. The rookie had two touchdown receptions Sunday of 5 and 2 yards and he has three touchdowns in the past two games. “He’s growing, but he’s still got a ways to go,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “We’re playing package football with him. He’s got to continue to come to work every day and round out all elements of his game.” Bryant finished with five catches for 83 yards, a 16.6 average. He was targeted seven times.

–LB Ryan Shazier (sprained knee) returned after a four-game absence and got the start at on the left side. He had four tackles and one quarterback hurry. “It just felt good to get out there again,” he said.

What we learned about the Colts:

1. Quarterback Andrew Luck now has six consecutive 300-yard passing games, breaking the franchise record held by Peyton Manning in 2009. The NFL record for most consecutive 300-yard games is nine, set by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees twice in 2011-12 and 2012-13.

2. The Colts were the only team in NFL that ranked in the top 5 in total offense and total defense. The Colts’ defense was dismal, getting gouged for 639 yards, including 522 through the air by Ben Roethlisberger, and six touchdowns. The Colts allowed the Steelers to convert 8-of-13 third-down conversions and average 7.9 yards per play.

–QB Andrew Luck has thrown for more than 300 yards in six consecutive games, eclipsing the franchise record set by Peyton Manning in 2009. The NFL record for most consecutive 300-yard games is nine, set by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees twice in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Luck passed for 400 Sunday with three touchdowns and two interceptions. “He did a nice job,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said. “We ran into a buzzsaw today. Again, they played well in all three phases. They got after us as good as you can get after anybody.”

–P/K Pat McAfee, who led the NFL with a net punting average of 44.8 yards and kickoff touchbacks with 36 entering the game Sunday, certainly didn’t hurt himself. He had three punts for 51 yards and a 45.7 net. Of his 30 punts, this season 13 have ended up inside the opponent’s 20.

–WR Donte Moncrief responded with seven catches for 113 yards, a 16.1 average, and one touchdown with WR Reggie Wayne (elbow) sitting out. He was targeted 12 times. “Donte was running great routes, playing fast and he certainly doesn’t play like a rookie,” QB Andrew Luck said. “He’s solid, he’s steady, and I’m happy for how well he played.”

–WR Ty Hilton had six catches for 155 yards, a 25.8 average, and a touchdown. He was targeted 12 times. “I think all of the wideouts did a heck of a job today,” QB Andrew Luck said.
