Starr had two strokes, heart attack

Published

The health of former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr is much worse than previously suggested.

A month after it was announced that Starr had a mild stroke, his wife, Cherry, said in a statement on the team’s web site that the Hall of Famer has actually had two strokes and a heart attack.

Cherry Starr said her 80-year-old husband had an ischemic stroke on Sept. 2. Then, he had a hemorrhagic stroke and a mild heart attack on Sept. 7. She said his progress has been slowed because of seizures. However, the seizures have since been under control through medication.

“Although there have been many bumps in the road over the past several weeks, we remain optimistic for Bart’s quality of life going forward, as he is becoming medically stable and beginning to make progress through rehabilitation,” Cherry Starr said. “Our family appreciates your prayers and patience while Bart takes the necessary time to recover. We love you all.”

Starr lives in Birmingham, Ala., but has frequently visited Green Bay. However, he missed the Packers’ annual alumni weekend last month.

Starr led the Packers to the first two Super Bowl championships. He also coached the team from 1975-83.
