Spiller returns to Saints practice field
The Sports Xchange
New Orleans running back C.J. Spiller has returned to practice and according to coach Sean Payton, it won’t take long for the Saints to incorporate him into the offense.
Spiller, who last practiced Aug. 10, had arthroscopic knee surgery last month and practiced Wednesday on a limited basis. But because he got his work in during the early part of camp, Payton has no fear that Spiller will be able to contribute almost immediately.
“He’s doing good; he’s doing good,” Payton said. “So like all these guys we’ll keep working them, keep getting them ready, have a plan.”
When asked if Spiller would be ready for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, Payton replied, “We’ll see how he goes.”
Spiller will be a welcome addition to the offense and quarterback Drew Brees.
“I like the way he looks. I like the look in his eye. He’s a pro,” Brees told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “Even though we had minimal time in training camp, I feel like I know the player, I know the athlete, I know what he can do for us.
“I think as we build in nuances for him throughout the season we’ll have a chance to go work on those things and build a comfort level.”
In 2012, Spiller accounted for 1,703 yards from scrimmage while with the Buffalo Bills.
Spiller signed a four-year deal worth $18 million — $9 million guaranteed — as a free agent in the offseason.
