Source: Steelers, Chiefs, Packers and 49ers Connect with Marshall CB Darryl Roberts
Pound for pound, Marshall cornerback Darryl Roberts is as good as it gets and NFL scouts are beginning to take notice.
Per a source, Marshall defensive back Darryl Roberts has had workouts with two NFC teams that include the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers. The former Thundering Herd cornerback also had visits with two AFC teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers.
“You take (Roberts) numbers and put it up against the numbers that were in the combine and he’s right in the top two or three corners in the country,” Marshall head coach Doc Holliday said via the Charleston Daily Mail. “There will probably be some scouts that may get fired too because they didn’t do a very damn good job when they came to watch practice. There will be some guys around the league that raise their eyebrows and wonder why they didn’t know more about him.”
Coach Holliday is dead on in his evaluation.
Roberts’ pro day results are overwhelmingly more impressive than most of the 32 defensive backs invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. In comparison to the players’ invited to the combine, his numbers rank second in the 40-yard dash (4.36), bench press (24), 3-cone (6.66), and broad jump (136 inches). Roberts’ vertical (40 inches) would rank fourth and his short-shuttle (4.05) would rank seventh overall.
Roberts (6-foot-0, 183 pounds) finished his final season with 75 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one interception. He emerged as a true shutdown cornerback for the Thundering Herd. Helping the defense finish No. 1 overall defensively in C-USA and second in the conference is pass defense.
His potential goes far beyond his athleticism. He was named first-team All-Conference USA and has been an impact player in the Marshall secondary since his freshman season when he appeared in 10 games. Fluid hips and closing speed define Roberts’ ability at the position. Along with his nose for the football and willingness to come up big in run support, he possesses all the intangibles of an NFL corner.
Pound for pound, it is possible that there is not another cornerback more talented and gifted athletically than Roberts.
