Source: Pittsburgh Steelers to Work Out Akron Zips CB Martel Durant

Steelers know value can be found in late rounds of the NFL Draft

Only a few days after the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the retirement of veteran cornerback Ike Taylor has FootballInsiders.com learned (per a source) that they will workout of Akron Zips defensive back Martel Durant.

Durant is one of the most gifted athletes amongst the current 2015 NFL Draft class of prospects. He delivered a stellar performance at his Pro Day with an 4.43 40-yard dash, 39-inch vertical, 11.5 foot broad jump, 7.15 3-cone drill and an impressive 4.38 short shuttle.

He appeared in all 12 games with two starts at safety his senior season and finished the season with 38 tackles that included 27 solo stops. Durant led all Zips defensive players with three interceptions.

Pittsburgh had two unlikely heroes step up last year in the secondary in defensive backs Antwon Blake and Brice McCain. Blake was undrafted in 2012 and began his career in Jacksonville and McCain was selected in the sixth-round by Houston Texans (2009). Their success each earned them new contracts this year with Blake remaining in Pittsburgh and McCain heading to the Miami Dolphins.

Durant fits the mold of a highly regarded late round prospect and could follow in the footsteps of Blake and McCain as he carves out a career in the NFL.
