Skins will start McCoy, but Griffin waits in wings

ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden again said Wednesday that third-string quarterback Colt McCoy will be his starter against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night.

But the door remains open for Robert Griffin III, who has missed the last five weeks because of a dislocated left ankle.

McCoy took over for Kirk Cousins in Sunday’s last-second victory over the Tennessee Titans. Griffin has slowly increased his workload in recent weeks and on Wednesday at practice took some snaps with the first team during team drills.

But there are still multiple hurdles left to clear before Griffin returns to the field. Washington head trainer Larry Hess has to clear Griffin for games. Then Gruden needs to see several days of quality practice from him before naming him the starter.

Time is running short for that, however.

Griffin took snaps as the first-team, second-team and scout team quarterback on Wednesday, Gruden said. Wednesday’s practice was considered a “bonus” day because the Redskins and Cowboys play on Monday night.

“We’ll find out from the trainers how (Griffin) feels and then Thursday (morning) will be the big thing,” Gruden said. “Another day’s work and we’ll see how he progresses.”

But Gruden also wants his team to know who will be under center early enough in the week to allow for appropriate preparation time.

McCoy, who has strictly run the scout team offense since training camp save for Sunday’s second half, needs work with the starters, too.

“You can’t replace those reps that you get in practice,” McCoy said. “That is huge for me, huge for my confidence, and even though we were pretty efficient in the game Sunday, we’ve still got to keep working, spend some time with each other. That will be huge this week.”

Washington’s practice was slightly more than an hour on Wednesday.

Griffin’s running isn’t a concern by now. He has looked fine for two weeks moving and cutting on side fields. But doing that during practice while rolling out to the left and right and cutting back remains a work in progress.

If Hess decides that Griffin isn’t ready then, he will most likely be inactive, Gruden said. He will not serve as the backup to McCoy. That role will remain with Cousins, who had entered the Sept. 14 game against Jacksonville and started the next five games before being pulled.

Griffin, who hasn’t spoken publicly since his injury, will make a statement to reporters on Friday or take questions if he is named the quarterback after Thursday’s practice.

“I am in no rush today to make any crazy decision, but I really want to see how (Griffin) is feeling tomorrow and then we will get another good day of practice tomorrow and go from there,” Gruden said.

“But if we had to wait for another week or another two weeks or after the bye week, then so be it, but that will not be my call initially.”

NOTES: With OLB Brian Orakpo out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle, the Redskins will need rookie Trent Murphy to fill that role. Murphy, who led the nation in sacks with 15 as a senior at Stanford last year, has seen significant playing time this season and held up. Orakpo, who was hurt in the second half of the Tennessee game, underwent surgery on Wednesday. … Redskins LB Keenan Robinson was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. He posted a career-high 14 tackles in Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans. No Washington player has had that many tackles in a game since LB Perry Riley in Week 1 of the 2013 season. Robinson was wearing a brace on his elbow, however, at Wednesday’s practice. “I think he just has a little strain,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “He’s OK.” … Redskins NT Barry Cofield returned to practice for the first time since sustaining a high ankle sprain in the first half of the season opener at Houston on Sept. 7. Cofield is on short-term injured reserve and is not eligible to play again until after Washington’s bye week on Nov. 16 at home against Tampa Bay. … Orakpo, who was hurt in the second half of the Tennessee game on Sunday, underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair that torn right pectoral muscle that ended his 2014 campaign. … WR Leonard Hankerson is hoping to begin his season soon. Hankerson tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last season during a Nov. 17 game at Philadelphia and his rehabilitation process continued well into the summer. “No soreness in the knee at all,” he said. “I feel good out there. I’m out there running around. I don’t feel like I missed a beat with 11 months off. … No doubt at all I could (play against Dallas).”
