Shaw named Browns starting QB
It had been assumed that Connor Shaw would be the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback this week, and head coach Mike Pettine removed any doubt on Friday when he announced that Shaw would start Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The Browns still have some paperwork to do because they have to formally add him to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that Shaw was expected to sign his contract Friday to officially be elevated from the practice squad.
He has been practicing with the first team all week.
Tyler Thigpen, signed Tuesday, will back up Shaw if Brian Hoyer cannot play.
Shaw, an undrafted rookie out of the University of South Carolina, has never played in a regular-season NFL game.
Shaw was pushed into service because Hoyer has missed the entire week of practice with shoulder and biceps injuries, and Johnny Manziel is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
