Seahawks reportedly in contract talks with LB Wagner
The Sports Xchange
With contract negotiations with quarterback Russell Wilson seemingly stalled, the Seattle Seahawks reportedly have begun talks with linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Both 2012 draft picks are entering the final year of their rookie contracts, and the Seahawks would like to lock up one of them before next offseason.
Talks with Wilson have not progressed far, and he and his agent have said they are willing to play out the final year of his deal, which will pay him $1.54 million.
Meanwhile, according to NFL.com and The Seattle Times on Monday, the Seahawks have begun negotiating with Wagner, who is due $977,427 in the final year of his rookie deal.
On May 15, Wagner told the Times he had heard nothing from the team but wanted to start talks soon.
Wagner, who made the Pro Bowl last year despite missing five games due to injury, is expected to get a contract worth at least $9 million per year.
Meanwhile, Wilson’s agent, Mark Rodgers, sent a 16-page position paper to the Seahawks last week, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The holdup in those negotiations is thought to be the amount of guaranteed money.
The market seemingly was set by Cam Newton’s contract with the Carolina Panthers, which guarantees $60 million.
Rodgers told SI.com last weekend, “Sometimes the best deal is the deal you don’t do.”
