Seahawks place CB Simon on IR, sign RB Smith
The Sports Xchange
The Seattle Seahawks placed cornerback Tharold Simon on injured reserve Saturday and signed running back Rod Smith from their practice squad.
The Seahawks added Smith to help with their running back depth as Marshawn Lynch will sit out Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a hamstring injury.
Running back Fred Jackson (ankle) is questionable after being injured against Detroit, meaning rookie Thomas Rawls could be the starter for the second straight game.
Smith, who signed with Seattle in May as an undrafted rookie out of Ohio State, rushed for 70 yards and 10 carries in the preseason and caught six passes for 27 yards. He was waived when the Seahawks reduced their roster to 53 players, then signed to the practice squad.
Simon suffered a dislocated toe on the Friday before the regular-season opener and briefly played in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers before suffering a setback.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Friday that Simon might require surgery. Simon, who missed his rookie season because of a toe injury, is dealing with a similar injury but on his other foot.
“He has had surgery on his other foot, same toe, same situation,” Carroll said. “That’s something we’re trying work through right now whether that’s necessary or not.”
