Seahawks focus on sending Green Bay packing
The Seattle Seahawks have never beaten the Green Bay Packers in the postseason, but they’re hoping that will change Sunday.
The Seahawks are 0-2 in the playoffs against the Packers, their opponent in the NFC Championship game at CenturyLink Field. The teams met to open the season and Seattle prevailed 36-16.
Can the Seahawks beat them again? A win would send Seattle to the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season.
“There’s one mission — go 1-0 this week,” Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said Friday. “We’ve done a phenomenal job this week. The guys have looked better than ever and they keep growing and keep building and we continue to get better. We’re excited about the opportunity.
“We’re going against a great football team — great quarterback, great defense, great offense, so it will be a lot of fun.”
Wilson and the Seahawks will be going head-to-head with one of the best quarterbacks in the game. But Wilson doesn’t see it as a duel between himself and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers.
“A lot of people talk about who’s the best quarterback and all that kind of stuff,” Wilson said. “I really don’t pay attention to it. I just try to do my job and I try to do my job better than anybody else and I try to do my job better than the other guy on the other side of the field. Every game that’s the focus and try to find a way to win.”
Wilson enters the matchup with the No. 2 passing rating in the NFL and Rodgers is No. 4. Rodgers is hampered by a calf injury — and how it affects his play Sunday won’t be known until the game gets going. Still, the Seahawks respect his ability.
“I know Aaron won’t be at his very best, but maybe he will be and we’re going to count on him doing everything that he always does and we’ll see what happens at game time,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “But you can’t get a more difficult team to deal with.”
The Seahawks have some injury concerns of their own. Starting right tackle Justin Britt is questionable with a sore knee and backup safety Jeron Johnson also is listed as questionable with an elbow injury.
Britt practiced on a limited basis Friday. If he’s unable to play, rookie Alvin Bailey would slide into his spot.
The Seahawks hope to have all hands on deck to face the Packers’ defense, which ranks fifth in the NFL in fewest yards allowed (315.0 per game) and second in passing yards allowed (170.0).
“It’s going to be a physical game,” Wilson said. “There are going to be guys flying around and bodies all over the place, so it’s going to be an absolute battle.”
