Seahawks claim S Smith off waivers
The Sports Xchange
As Pro Bowl safety Kam Chancellor continued his holdout Friday, the Seattle Seahawks swapped out his roster replacement, claiming safety Robert Smith off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts and releasing safety Ty Zimmerman.
Smith signed with the Colts as an undrafted rookie on May 5 after a four-year career at Clemson in which he recorded 182 tackles and four interceptions.
Zimmerman had signed with Seattle on July 31, ostensibly as a roster fill-in for Chancellor.
Chancellor reportedly is seeking to have his 2015 and 2016 salaries turned into up-front cash, but the Seahawks have not been amenable to redoing the five-year, $29 million contract he signed in 2013. He is guaranteed $4.55 million this season and is scheduled to be paid $5.1 million in 2016.
Meanwhile, Chancellor apparently is still invested in the team even if he is not at training camp. His backup, DeShawn Shead, told The News Tribune that Chancellor is viewing practice film and “coaching me up.”
