Seahawks CB Williams: Eagles exhausted, outcoached in 2014
The Sports Xchange
New Seahawks cornerback Cary Williams was released by the Philadelphia Eagles and sounds like a man who couldn’t be more pleased that he landed in Seattle.
Williams signed a three-year deal with the Seahawks to replace right cornerback Byron Maxwell in the vaunted Legion of Boom secondary. His two seasons with the Eagles were a relative roller-coaster, and the outspoken Williams clashed with coach Chip Kelly.
Williams, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, said the difference in the approach of the coaches with the Seahawks as compared to the Eagles sets Seattle apart.
“I feel like I’m a part of it, but I feel like I have to earn my stripes to be considered a member of the Legion of Boom” he said in an interview with 710 ESPN in Seattle. “I have to earn people’s trust, earn respect.”
Williams said the big difference is guys in Seattle are a family.
“Guys generally want you to be great – expect greatness each and every day, each in every play,” he said. “That family-oriented mindset, attitude.”
Williams plays with a chip on his shoulder, a later-round draft choice much like All-Pro teammate Richard Sherman. He said Sherman is one of the hardest workers he has played with, and still brings up some of the cornerbacks drafted ahead of him during workouts.
Williams said Kelly’s focus with the Eagles when the Seahawks came to town and thoroughly dominated a 24-14 game was Philadelphia’s conditioning making them the superior team.
“When we got out there, we got our teeth kicked in,” Williams said. “…Towards the end of the year we were exhausted and got outcoached in the majority of games.”
