Seahawks’ Carroll unsure about injured stars
A day after one of the wildest comeback wins in NFL playoff history, Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he was unsure of the status of two of his star defenders.
Defensive backs Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman underwent MRIs early Monday, but Carroll had not heard the results when he met with reporters.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I have nothing to report.”
Both players were injured against the Green Bay Packers in the Seahawks’ 28-22 overtime victory in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.
After the game, both indicated they would play in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots on Feb. 1 in Glendale, Ariz.
Thomas reportedly suffered a dislocated shoulder in the second quarter. He went to the locker room to get a harness placed on his shoulder and then returned to finish the game. He even used the shoulder to blast Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy out of bounds on one running play shortly after Thomas returned.
Sherman suffered an elbow injury — initially thought to be a sprain — on the first play of the fourth quarter but he remained in the game.
Sherman was hurt chasing down James Starks on a 32-yard run. As Sherman tried to swipe at the ball near the sideline, his elbow was hit by Kam Chancellor’s pads as the safety knocked Starks out of bounds.
“It’s worth mentioning again the effort that those guys put out,” Carroll said of Thomas and Sherman. “Both those guys were in dire straits — could they play? They didn’t flinch, not for a second. They played their hearts out. Their courage and toughness … couldn’t have been more evident.”
“I know who I am. I’m a warrior,” Thomas said Sunday. “If I can play, I don’t care if I can’t function really well. I know if I can help the team I’m going to be in there.”
Carroll said guard J.R. Sweezy suffered an ankle injury but played through it and should be fine for the Super Bowl.
Right tackle Justin Britt, who sat out Sunday with a knee issue, also is expected to play in the Super Bowl. Carroll said he could have dressed for the game Sunday but the team chose to hold him out.
Backup safety Jeron Johnson (elbow) also should be ready for the Super Bowl.
