A week before training camp begins for CFL teams, defensive end Michael Sam joined the Montreal Alouettes, agreeing to a one-year deal.

Sam was previously with the St. Louis Rams, who drafted Sam out of Missouri in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, and Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys added Sam to their practice squad when he was waived during final roster cuts.

Sam had three sacks in the 2014 preseason with the Rams, who have a defensive line comprised entirely of first-round draft picks. He had 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss with the Tigers as a senior.

Sam’s contract includes a team option for 2016.

Sam, 25, was co-defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference in 2013. Two months after the season ended, Sam announced he was gay.
