Saints trade OG Grubbs to Chiefs

Published

on

Two days after trading tight end Jimmy Graham, the New Orleans Saints on Thursday reportedly dealt former Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Saints will receive the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick in return, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Grubbs, 31, is in the fourth year of a five-year, $36 million contract and was set to count $9.6 million against the salary cap. The Saints, who have the worst cap situation in the NFL, will realize a net savings of $3.6 million.

Grubbs is the latest high-profile player to leave the Saints, who traded Graham to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday and also have released linebacker Curtis Lofton and running back Pierre Thomas.

Linebacker David Hawthorne restructured his contract on Wednesday, the latest player to help make room for the Saints. The Saints had about $4.3 million in cap space before trading Grubbs.

The Chiefs, meanwhile, get a former two-time Pro Bowl guard to play next to 2013 first-round left tackle Eric Fisher.
