Saints re-do Ellerbe deal

Published

on

Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe, acquired from the Miami Dolphins last week for wide receiver Kenny Stills and a third-round pick, agreed to a new contract with the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

Ellerbe, who signed a $30 million deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2013 after the Baltimore Ravens won the Super Bowl, was due $21.5 million over the final three years of the deal. The new contract reduces his base salary by $7.4 million, earning $4.9 million guaranteed in 2015 and an average of $5 million over the final two years of the deal.

His base salary in 2015 was cut to $1.1 million from $8.425 million.

Ellerbe will line up at inside linebacker to help cushion the blow of losing Curtis Lofton from the middle of the Saints’ defense. Ellerbe, 29, played only one game last season and is recovering from that hip injury suffered in September 2014 against the New England Patriots.
