Saints host RB Spiller

Published

on

A shift in priorities and perhaps offensive approach in New Orleans could make the Saints an attractive destination for running backs, and Buffalo Bills free agent C.J. Spiller emerged Thursday as the top player on coach Sean Payton’s radar.

Spiller, 27, was injured (collarbone) most of last season and had 78 carries for 300 yards. The former first-round pick is known for his speed — he was timed at 4.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash in . To the point, he was hurt last season on a 52-yard gain. At Clemson, 21 of his 51 career touchdowns were 50 yards or longer.

New Orleans was also hosting cornerback Brandon Browner on Thursday.

The Saints traded tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for center Max Unger, one of the highest-rated run-blocking centers in the NFL. Payton was groomed by Bill Parcells, whose priority on offense was to establish a strong running game. The Saints were successful with that approach on occassion in 2014, but defensive breakdowns and injuries on offense contributed to pass-heavy play-calling in the second half of many games.

Spiller has never been a 20-carry-per-game type of back but in a co-op with recently re-signed Mark Ingram (four year, $16 million) he could be the ideal fit for a team that utilizes its running backs as receivers. Spiller’s career high for carries in Buffalo was 207 in 2012, when he gained 1,244 yards on the ground. But he failed to reach 110 carries in three of his five years with the Bills.

Spiller is also rumored to be on the Cowboys’ list of replacement options should DeMarco Murray find a new home. Murray led the NFL in rushing with 1,854 yards in 2014 but cap-strapped Dallas has offered $6 million per season, less than the NFL Offensive Player of the Year winner thinks he’s worth.
