Round 7 Of The NFL Draft Featured Some Notable Prospects

The Oakland Raiders made a draft pick that embodies what the seventh round is all about.

As the NFL Draft gets deeper, teams and fans no longer looks for starters, but for guys that will make their team and possibly contribute.  Many of these picks are productive, sometimes undersized guys from smaller schools, or big, strong athletes who didn’t put up much production in college.

Teams are looking for upside and will take chances with these late-round selections.

One of the picks that represent the “looks like Tarzan” mold is the Oakland Raiders selection of former Florida Gators wide receiver and return man Andre Debose.  Debose is a former 5-star recruit who was supposed to be the next Percy Harvin.  Injuries and inconsistency, not only from him but the Gators quarterback position led him to a very marginal career in Gainesville.

Still, Debose has one thing that you can’t teach.

Speed.  Deep, game-breaking speed.

Debose has reportedly been clocked in the 4.3’s and has four career kickoff return touchdowns.  In the Al Davis days, Debose may have been an early pick that was laughed at (Darrius Heyward-Bey), but in the seventh-round, this is the type of pick that every team should be looking for.

Some other notable picks in the seventh round include:

FSU Offensive tackle Bobby Hart- New York Giants

Notre Dame tight end Ben Koyack- Jacksonville Jaguars

Central Arkansas wide receiver Dezmin Lewis- Buffalo Bills

LSU running back Kenny Hilliard- Houston Texans

Louisville free safety Gerod Holliman- Pittsburgh Steelers

Oregon cornerback Ike Ekpre-Olomu- Cleveland Browns

William and Mary wide receiver Tre McBride- Tennessee Titans

Northwestern quarterback Trevor Siemian- Denver Broncos

Alabama defensive end Xzavier Dickson- New England Patriots

USC linebacker Hayes Pullard- Cleveland Browns

Teams took to the 7th-round to try and continue to build their offensive and defensive lines as several offensive and defensive lineman came off the board in the draft’s final round. There weren’t a ton of surprise guys left by the time Round 7 rolled around, but the Steelers made a solid pick drafting Louisville safety Gerod Holliman.

My favorite pick of the last round is LSU running back Kenny Hilliard who was taken by the Houston Texans and has a real chance to get some snaps in relief of Arian Foster and Alfred Blue.– Pat Donovan

As the 2015 NFL Draft comes to a close in Chicago, there has been many interesting selections. Without question one pick I was ecstatic to see was the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Monmouth, mammoth wide receiver Neal Sterling.

Sterling is 6-foot-3 and 239 pounds, which makes for a massive target at receiver. He made his mark at the College Gridiron Showcase in a game that included several other big name players from big name schools, but it was Sterling who out-shined them all.

The Jaguars are desperate for playmakers on offense and although Sterling is a late-round pick, Jacksonville could have a place for Sterling on the current roster. Second-year quarterback Blake Bortles might find the large catching radius of Sterling a positive as red zone target.–Bo Marchionte

Favorite Picks: RB Marcus Murphy (Saints), WR Dezmin Lewis (Bills), WR Mario Alford (Cincinnati), OT Corey Robinson (Lions)

The seventh round will be remembered not for who was selected, but for who wasn’t. Each team bypassed its final opportunity to take a chance on OT La’el Collins, a top-15 talented who plummeted all the way off every draft board after being called back to Louisiana to answer questions about the murder of his ex-girlfriend. While Collins is not a suspect in the case, he is toxic in the eyes of NFL teams scared of drafting the next Aaron Hernandez. Collins has been told by the NFL he will not be allowed to re-enter next year’s draft, so it will be interesting to see if clubs wait for more clarity on his situation before the bidding begins for his services in unrestricted free agency.
