Roseman, Kelly wrestling for control of Eagles

Published

on

Head coach Chip Kelly and general manager Howie Roseman are wrestling for control of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The first signs of a struggle were apparent last season but not until Kelly-endorsed vice president of player personnel Tom Gamble was fired Wednesday did the team expose outward evidence of the internal strife.

“We thank Tom for his service over the past two seasons and wish him and his family the best as they move forward,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “I appreciate all Tom has done for our scouting department and our team.”

According to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie, Roseman’s job is secure. However, parties on Roseman’s behalf reached out to the New York Jets about their general manager opening this week, according to multiple reports. The Jets did not show interest in hiring Roseman, according to the New York Daily News.

In his season-ending press conference Monday, Kelly was asked about the possibility of Gamble leaving the team to become a general manager elsewhere. Gamble interviewed for front office positions in Miami and Tampa Bay last offseason and was reportedly drawing interest from the Chicago Bears, who fired Phil Emery after three seasons as general manager.

“I think Tom does an outstanding job and if he has the opportunity to do that, then I would support him in anything,” Kelly said. “He’s a heck of a football guy.”

Prior to joining the Eagles, Gamble worked in the San Francisco 49ers’ front office. During his tenure in Philadelphia, Gamble acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Connor Barwin, safety Malcolm Jenkins, cornerbacks Nolan Carroll, Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher plus quarterback Mark Sanchez, among others.
