Rivers wants to retire as a Charger, but not yet
The Sports Xchange
SAN DIEGO — Quarterback Philip Rivers said it would be “awesome” to retire as a San Diego Charger. But the two sides have yet to come to an agreement on a contract extension.
Asked if he expected one before the season starts, Rivers said, “I have no expectations at this point.”
Rivers worked out this week with the team during OTAs that ended Thursday.
But safety Eric Weddle skipped the OTAs because he is dissatisfied with how he is being treated by the Chargers. Weddle is in the last year of his contract and there have been no talks about an extension.
Among the answers the Chargers must find is the makeup of their offensive line.
The team signed left guard Orlando Franklin in the offseason after center Nick Hardwick and right guard Jeromey Clary retired.
“You’ll see different groups out there,” coach Mike McCoy said.
There has been chatter about right tackle D.J. Fluker moving inside to right guard with Franklin going to right tackle. But there were few clues in the limited time the media were allowed to watch practice.
–Tight end Antonio Gates and left tackle King Dunlap weren’t at the initial workouts, but their absences weren’t contract related. With Dunlap out, D.J. Fluker took some snaps at left tackle.
–Cornerback Jason Verrett looked good and participated in drills as he rebounds from a torn labrum suffered last season.
–San Diego politicians are to meet with Chargers president Dean Spanos next week regarding the financing of a new stadium.
