Rice issues apology for his ‘horrible mistake’
Almost one year after his arrest for knocking out his then-fiancee in a hotel elevator, former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice has issued another apology and asked for forgiveness.
Rice, who was suspended last season by the NFL after video surfaced of the incident, issued an apology to the city of Baltimore and Ravens fans on Friday morning.
Rice apologize for his “horrible mistake.”
“This is not a farewell or goodbye,” Rice said in a letter issued to The Baltimore Sun. “The last seven years that my family and I have spent in Baltimore have by far been the best of our lives. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for the love and support you’ve shown my family and I throughout my football career. We’ll always be grateful for the love we’ve received from all of our fans and supporters, and for winning a Super Bowl.
“To all the kids who looked up to me, I’m truly sorry for letting you down, but I hope it’s helped you learn that one bad decision can turn your dream into a nightmare. There is no excuse for domestic violence, and I apologize for the horrible mistake I made. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, and I hope to make a positive difference in people’s lives by raising awareness of this issue.
“Thank you, Baltimore Ravens, for all you have done for my family and I. I’m very grateful to Steve Bisciotti, Ozzie Newsome, John Harbaugh, and everyone at 1 Winning Drive. I love you all very much, and I’ll always be proud to say I played for the Baltimore Ravens.”
The Sun reported that Rice plans to move to New York as he attempts to return to the NFL. Rice is still “hoping to relaunch his football career” and while he “hasn’t visited or worked out for any NFL teams,” he continues to work out in “hopes of landing another job in the NFL.”
Rice was arrested last Feb. 15 after the incident involving his then-fiancee and now-wife Janay Palmer in an elevator at an Atlanta City, N.J., casino. Rice was cut by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely on Sept. 8 for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy after a second video from inside an elevator showed Rice knocking her unconscious with a punch.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell originally suspended Rice for just two games after he pleaded not guilty to a third-degree charge of aggravated assault.
The initial punishment set off a social media firestorm and put Goodell on the hot seat, leading the NFL owners to approve a stricter and revised personal-conduct policy that calls for the league to hire special counsel to conduct investigations independent of the commissioner’s office.
Rice later appealed the suspension and won. The three-time Pro Bowler was reinstated by the league in November but has not signed with a team.
