Rice hearing wraps up in New York

Published

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice and his wife Janay testified Thursday on the second and final day of an appeals hearing before an arbitrator.

Rice and his wife left the New York office of the former federal judge who heard the case about three hours apart. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell testified for more than two hours on Wednesday.

There was no immediate word on when the arbitrator would make a ruling in the case.

Rice, a former Pro Bowler, is challenging the NFL’s authority to change his original two-game suspension to indefinite after video was released by TMZ showing him knocking out hsi wife in a hotel elevator earlier this year.

“The NFLPA thanks Judge Barbara Jones for presiding over a fair and thorough hearing,” the NFL Players’ Association said in a statement. “This is the first time in the history of our League that a disciplinary hearing has been conducted pursuant to a joint agreement on a neutral arbitrator. We commend NFL owners and officials for the wisdom of this decision which enhances the credibility and integrity of our business.

“The collectively bargained rights of all players must be vehemently preserved and we take that obligation seriously. This appeal, presided over by a neutral arbitrator, which included a presentation of all the relevant facts, witness testimony to the truth and cross examination, is the due process that every athlete deserves.”

Also testifying the hearing, which came nearly two months after Rice was suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s personal conduct policy and released by the Ravens, were NFL security chief Jeffery Miller and Ravens president Dick Cass.

Rice also has filed a wrongful termination agreement against the Ravens.

He played in two preseason games this year before the incident became public.
