Rice appears at high school game

Published

on

Former Baltimore Ravens running back and fallen football star Ray Rice attended a high school football game on Saturday — his first public appearance since a video surfaced showing him punching the woman who became his wife, which led to his indefinite suspension from the NFL.

Rice was accompanied by his wife, Janay, and his baby daughter in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Students at his former high school say they were glad Rice appeared on the field where he once starred.

“Ray is a part of our family, and a part of this program and that’s why I’m happy he’s here today,” New Rochelle Huguenots coach Louis DeRienzo told The Journal News (Westchester, N.Y.) “I know the character of the man and he will rise from this.”

And even though some were happy to see Rice, his alma mater has taken steps to sever its relationship with him. The school has reportedly removed Rice’s picture and his Baltimore Ravens jersey from its wall of fame.

The principal of the school even sent a letter to students’ parents.

“We condemn his actions and know that solving problems with physical violence is never acceptable.”

Not everyone watching the game was pleased that Rice was in the crowd.

“I don’t really have any comment. I mean, I guess he just came back to get some show of support from the team crowd,” one person told the local CBS television affiliate.

“You know, it’s a family issue and he should have the decency to keep away I guess,” another person said.
