RG3: ‘We’re focused on San Francisco’

Published

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, perhaps taking a page from Bill Belichick, wouldn’t bite on criticism earlier this week from head coach Jay Gruden by repeating “We’re focused on San Francisco” during his press conference Wednesday.

Belichick, the England Patriots coach, famously shut out the media after a 41-14 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4 with repeated proclamations of, “We’re on to Cincinnati.”

RG3 went with a similar strategy during his Wednesday media availability, repeating over and over his version to reporters:

“We’re focused on San Francisco.”

On Monday, Gruden was publicly critical of Griffin following Sunday’s 27-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to drop the team to 3-7. Griffin was sacked six times and threw two interceptions, raising his sack total on the season to 15 in 115 dropbacks.

After Sunday’s game, Griffin said:

“We’re not a very good football team right now. Every guy has to look himself in the mirror and say that. You can’t … say, ‘It is not my fault because I’m a baller, I’m a Pro Bowl player.’ Right now, we have no Pro Bowl players.”

In response, Gruden said Monday:

“Robert had some fundamental flaws. His footwork was below average. He took three-step drops when he should have taken five. He took a one-step drop when he should have taken three, on a couple occasions, and that can’t happen. He stepped up when he didn’t have to step up and stepped into pressure. He read the wrong side of the field a couple times.

“So his basic performance was not even close to being good enough (for) what we expect from the quarterback position.

“Robert needs to understand he needs to worry about himself, number one, and not everybody else. It’s his job to worry about his position, his footwork, his fundamentals, his reads, his progressions, his job at the quarterback position. It’s my job to worry about everybody else. And, yes, everybody else needs to improve. … But it’s not his place. His place is to talk about himself and he knows that. He just elaborated a little too much.”

Griffin was asked Monday if he needs to make changes to his fundamentals.

“Jay wants me to play better. I want to play better. We’re focused on San Francisco,” Griffin said early in his press conference.

Then he was asked if he planned to dial it back in what he says to the media.

“Yeah man, like I said, we’re focused on San Francisco, so that’s all we got.”

Next came a question asking how a quarterback can improve his mechanics.

“Yeah man, like I said, just focus on San Francisco now.”

Then he was asked if this year set back his development.

“Oh man, I’ve only been able to play a couple games, but we got another one coming up and that’s all we’re promised. So just focused on San Francisco, just doing what i can to help this team win.”

Next question was regarding Steve Young’s criticism of his work habits.

“Focus on San Francisco man, not letting anything on the outside distract us from that.”

Then he was asked whether he ever thinks of what’s changed since 2012.

“Like I said man, focus on San Francisco … just trying to hammer everything down and get better at my craft like coach wants me to.”

Griffin finally stepped away from the podium after eight minutes.
