Reports: Seahawks to sign LB Wagner to $43 million deal
The Sports Xchange
The Seattle Seahawks reportedly will make All-Pro Bobby Wagner the NFL’s highest-paid middle linebacker.
The fourth-year player agreed to a four-year extension worth $43 million, according to reports by FOX Sports and NFL Media late Saturday night.
Wagner’s is the second megadeal completed by the Seahawks in two days. Quarterback Russell Wilson signed a four-year, $87.6 million contract before training camp began Friday.
When word of Wagner’s deal got out Saturday night, Wilson tweeted, “My bro!!!! #BigTime.”
On Friday, Wagner expressed some annoyance that his deal was not yet done, responding to a question about a deadline by saying, “Now. That’s my deadline.”
“If it happens, it happens,” he said. “All I know is at the end of the season you all know that I’m the best linebacker in this league, and that’s my focus. Everything else will take care of itself.”
Coach Pete Carroll was emphatic Friday that the Seahawks plan to sign him soon.
“We’re on it,” Carroll said. “Whoever thought that we were done with that thing, that was not right. We’re on it, and we’re going to keep competing to get that done. We have planned for this for a long time, and nothing has changed at all in that. Our guys are working at it by the hour.”
Wagner, who was voted to his first All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams last season, will become the highest-paid middle linebacker in NFL history.
