Reports: Jets expected to hire Texans’ Maccagnan as GM
The New York Jets are expected to hire Houston Texans scouting director Mike Maccagnan as the team’s general manager, according to reports Sunday.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Maccagnan, who has been Houston’s director of college scouting since 2012, likely will replace John Idzik, who was fired after two seasons as the Jets’ general manager.
Maccagnan reportedly has been in New York the past three days meeting with owner Woody Johnson.
Head coach Rex Ryan and Idzik were fired on Dec. 29 after the Jets missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
According to ESPN.com, the Jets were prepared to fly to Seattle immediately after Saturday night’s divisional-round playoff game if the Seahawks had lost to try to hire defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their head coach.
The Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 31-17 to advance to next Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.
Quinn has spent the last two seasons as Seattle’s defensive coordinator. He was also with the Seahawks in 2009-10 before becoming the defensive coordinator in 2011 at the University of Florida.
According to ESPN, the Jets’ interest in Quinn is one of the reasons the team kept Maccagnan in town for a second interview. Maccagnan would have gone with the Jets’ contingent to Seattle to try to hire Quinn, who also is drawing interest from the Chicago Bears and other teams.
