Report: Trestman likely to be fired

Published

on

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman is likely to be fired at the end of the regular season, according to AM-670 in Chicago.

Citing a source, Dan Bernstein reported Tuesday via Twitter that team ownership met Monday when it was determined the second-year coach is likely to be fired. Per Bernstein, the fate of general manager Phil Emery is undetermined.

“We can’t sugarcoat it,” Trestman said after a 31-15 loss to the Saints dropped the Bears to 1-4 in primetime games Monday.

There is some question as to the timing of the move involving Trestman. The Bears do not have scheduled media availability Tuesday and Wednesday. Typically Trestman’s press conference would be held the day after a Monday night game.

Emery interviewed more than a dozen candidates, including finalist Bruce Arians, who landed with the Arizona Cardinals, before replacing Lovie Smith with Trestman in January 2013.

The Bears went 8-8 in Trestman’s first season but are 5-9 in 2014, near the bottom of NFL rankings in offense and defense. Chicago has lost six of its last eight games after losing four of six to end the 2013 season.

Emery said Monday that Trestman made the decision to keep offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer, who admitted to being the anonymous source of a story criticizing quarterback Jay Cutler. Trestman and Emery collectively decided to pay Cutler, who leads the NFL in turnovers in 2014, who signed a seven-year, $126 million contract at the end of the 2013 season.
