Report: Tampering charges filed against Jets
Tampering charges have been filed against the New York Jets because of comments Jets owner Woody Johnson made last month about New England Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis, ESPN.com reported Sunday.
The NFL is investigating the matter, trying to determine whether a violation occurred, and what the penalty should be if a violation did occur.
The comments in question came during a news conference in which Johnson talked about the dismissal of head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik.
In the course of that discussion, Johnson spoke highly of Revis, and said, “I’d love for Darrelle to come back.”
Later, Johnson said, “I misspoke today when I commented on Darrelle Revis. I would never interfere in the contractual relationship of a player with another team and should not have used those words.”
Johnson also said he called Patriots owner Robert Kraft to apologize.
Revis’ contract has an option for 2015 that is believed to be worth $20 million. The ESPN.com report said the Patriots are likely to decline the option, making Revis an unrestricted free agent. Only then could he speak to the Jets.
According to the NFL’s tampering policy, “Any public or private statement of interest, qualified or unqualified, in another club’s player to that player’s agent or representative, or to a member of the news media, is a violation of the Anti-Tampering Policy.”
